Lodwar Mission

Lodwar Mission was launched in Autumn of 2014 in support of School in Turkana for the blind and visually impaired (Kenya, Africa).

Located in East Africa, Kenya is home to approximately 15.000.000 people in rural areas that are living in poverty. Thousands of children drop out of school due to low scores and extenuating factors.

Princess Carina Organization together with Diocese of Lodwar supports the Integrated Primary School in South Turkana for the blind and visually impaired (in Kenya, Africa). This school is unique as it allows blind and visually impaired children to receive specialized teaching, while remaining integrated with sighted children. There are also boarding facilities for the blind children only. Some of these children continue their education even at university level.

We dream that children leaving the school feel confident, conversant and with a high level of self-esteem.

Achievements

Thanks to the ongoing commitment and generosity of some sponsors and friends, we managed to accomplish a lot. Blind children were supported in many ways according to agreed 3 year funding pattern (up to 2010). A special food plan was launched to help whenever the World Food Programme delays would occur. Some school equipments have been purchased and regular transportation helped children to access school. In course of 2008/10 five visually impaired girls attended vocational training at St Francis Training Centre for Visually Impaired in Kapenguria (the neighbouring district). These girls learnt to knit using special machines. One partially sighted girl learnt tailoring. We hope these years of vocational training will equip them with necessary self reliance skills. But much more of support is needed to assist other students to put their skills into practice and to become independent.
